dr-nayani-makkar

Dr. Nayani Balbir Singh Makkar AIIMS PG Topper says, ‘Success cannot be achieved overnight’. She has shared her experiences with RankJunction which will be beneficial for the students who are preparing for various PG entrance exams.

Below is an excerpt from her interview

RankJunction: In which year did you pass your MBBS exam?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: I passed my final MBBS in Dec 2014, but this is my first attempt at the PG entrance exams.

RankJunction: What was your MBBS percentage marks (aggregate or final year)?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: My aggregate percentage is 72.24%.

RankJunction: When did you seriously start preparing for the PG Entrance exam?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: 3 months before the AIIMS exam.

RankJunction: How many hours did you study each day?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: 10-12 hours a day.

RankJunction: Which books did you read for the theory part?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: I primarily restricted myself to standard textbooks:
Anatomy – Gray’s & Snell
Physiology – Samson-Wright & Ganong
Biochemistry – Harper
Microbiology – Jawetz and some topics from Ananth Narayan
Pathology – Robbins
Pharmacology – Goodman & Gilman
Forensic – Reddy with Sumit Seth for revision
PSM – Parks’ and Vivek Jain
Ophthalmology – Parson’s
Medicine – Harrison’s
Surgery – Bailey & Love with some topics from Schwartz
Obstetrics – William’s for clinical obstetrics and Dutta for basics
Gynecology – Shaw’s
Paediatrics – Nelson’s
Radiology – Dr. Sumer Sethi’s book
Psychiatry – Niraj Ahuja and Kaplan USMLE notes (also Mental Illnesses chapter in Harrison)
Orthopedics – Apley’s
Anesthesia – Ajay Yadav + Across

RankJunction: Which books did you read for MCQs revision?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: Primarily previous years papers (Amit Ashish for AIIMS, Manoj Chaudhary for PGI and Arvind Arora for NEET type questions).
I also used Dr. Sumer Sethi’s book for Radiology, Dr. Devesh Mishra’s Pathology, Dr. Sumit Seth’s Forensic Medicine Review and Dr. Vivek Jain’s PSM.

RankJunction: What were the subjects you focused upon?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: An in depth knowledge of medicine, surgery and pathology is essential for any PG entrance. Additionally, for AIIMS I focussed upon ophthalmology and forensic medicine.

RankJunction: What was your strategy for the exam day? How many questions did you attempt?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: It is most important to stay calm throughout the examination and attempt each question afresh. Even if you feel that you do not know a few questions, do not get worked and try to complete the rest as level-headedly as possible.
I attempted 194 questions, and I think I have got 155-160 of those correct.

RankJunction: In which field do you want to specialize in? Why?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: I always have had a great passion for general medicine. It is mathematical, has great scope for research and enables one to comprehensively care for the patient.

RankJunction: Was RankJunction helpful in your preparation?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: I found tests from RankJunction to be extremely helpful. These are well designed, extremely concept based and extensive. The ranking system with a fairly large number of students is reasonably accurate. Your live mock tests, in particular, were indispensable.

RankJunction: What is your advice to future aspirants?
Dr.Nayani Makkar: Success in PG entrance examinations cannot be achieved by studying for a week, a month or even a year. It has to be the culmination of consistent effort throughout medical college, ideally driven by a desire to learn clinical medicine and not just by the desire to clear an exam.
Also, focus in clinics, clinical skill is essential for the new pattern of exams coming up.

Our Heartfelt Congratulations to Dr.Nayani Makkar on her achievement & huge success.

Dr.Deepak Murthy from Mysore, Karnataka

Exam got over on 12th Dec. done well. I really thank you and RankJunction for showing way for proper PG preparation. I solved 52 papers from RankJunction. Many questions were there directly from those. Pretty sure of getting a good rank. Thanks a lot Bhagyashree.

Dr.Athulya Ajith from Bangalore, Karnataka

They asked many pharmacology questions….many newly approved drugs

Just like….the newly approved etoposide group drug for…etc

Pathology was very less

Anatomy was also quite more

Picture based questions…many ecgs n skin disorders

Dr.Rohit sutar from Mumbai, Maharashtra

Thanks Bhagyashree..You have been very supportive and helpful throughout this period..I gave exam on the very first day..felt short on management of time..also lack of revision was something unable to afford.. back to studies and hoping for the best..

Thanks once again and hoping to receive your support and assistance till I get a shot at my willing seat…

Dr.Krushikumar Soladhra from Jetpur, Gujarat

My NEET was on 8th Dec…paper seemed to be pretty easy for me… offcourse some questions were tough…but that would be for all. I can say it was better than all NBE exam I gave till now.

Jipmer seemed to be tough this time… questions were as usual lengthy to read

Much tough than last july exam. Many new things were asked. But that too was a bit better than last exam.

And RANKJUNCTION helped me in getting used to CBT (time management), and practice MCQs

Dr. Priyanki Mishra from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand

My exam was on 10th Dec..So many one liners mainly medicine, surgery, OBS & gynae. No. of image based questions in Radiology. Few very tough questions on ECG. Very in-depth questions from Pharmacology. Oncology related questions, on its genes, staging, regimen. Theories of cholesteatoma very deep study required.

Dr.Pooja Sah from Ferozepur,Punjab

JIPMER was a bit difficult for me, many numerical were asked from physiology.

NEET had a set of very basic questions from all subjects. About 50-60 questions were moderately difficult. Some 20 odd Questions were difficult. RankJunction regular tests and group discussions proved very helpful.

Dr.Sooraj Sankar from Kollam, Kerala

My NEET was on Dec’10th at morning session, It was a bit tough actually.

There were 30% questions that anyone can answer and some 25% really tough questions..the rest was actually a mixed bag.

Rankjunction helped me a lot in answering some tricky questions. Thank you for your valuable contribution! Hoping for the best to happen.

Dr.Suman Sarkar from Gandachara, Tripura

Thank you RankJunction for creating this wonderful platform where we can share our knowledge and know virtually if we are moving in right direction . Furthermore the online practice tests, mock test as well as subject wise test have helped me a lot to improve myself in terms of speed , accuracy and perfection. The one liners and various mnemonics send by you have also proved to be helpful in terms of quick revision. The IBQs prepared by you were also very good in terms of giving an idea about what might be asked in PGMEE. And last but not the least the group discussion was very very helpful.

Dr.Gnanam Vel from Krishnagiri, Tamilnadu

Thanks a lot RankJunction, Only because of you, I had faced the exam with full confidence. I planned to take up the exam next year. Accidentally I visited RJ page in Facebook. That took me in a right path. Whatsap discussions, questions, images.. Everything was useful..Only after joining RJ, I got idea about the preparation. Felt really happy after completing the exam.

Medical students will have to clear ‘exit test’

$

0

The draft Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2016, unveiled by the Union health ministry on 29th December 2016, said Medical students will have to pass the National Exit Test (NEXT) to use the ‘doctor’ title after completing a five-and-a-half-year-long medical course. The test is expected to create a level-playing field in medical education, increasingly becoming privatized.

A central government official said NEXT would improve the quality of medical education in the country and help benchmark students.

NEXT will substitute three tests :
1. NEET for postgraduate admissions
2. Recruitment for central health services
3. Foreign graduate medical examination

It will be an outcome-based test. The results of how students from individual colleges have performed in NEXT will be made public. If a college has over 90% students clearing the test, it will automatically act as an indicator. Students can make an informed choice while selecting colleges.

Dr P Shingare, who heads the state’s department of medical education and research, said NEXT is a good move. NEXT will bring about standardisation.
A professor said inspection by authorities can just rate the infrastructure of a college and only the outcome of NEXT can be a tangible parameter to determine the quality of that college.

Dr.Soumya Inamadar: Yes very much. Rank Junction helped me a lot to get myself used to the online exam pattern. RankJunction: What is your advice to future aspirants?

Dr.Soumya Inamadar: To all the PG aspirants out there, believe in hard work and when you decide to prepare do it sincerely. Some say the lucky ones get good rank, it’s not the fact as luck comes to those who work hard. Write all the exams i.e. NEET, AIIMS, PGI and JIPMER because nobody knows where our destiny will take us.

All the best and Thank you very much team Rank Junction.

Hearty Congratulations to Dr.Soumya Inamadar on her achievement & huge success.
